Marie et l’enfant, mi-ange, mi-Jésus – Marie and the child, half-angel, half Jesus

Quand j’étais dans la chapelle du Rosaire, décorée par Matisse, j’ai soudain réalisé qu’une de mes Madones à l’enfant avait été inspirée par lui.

De retour à Paris, j’ai déterré le dessin initial et l’ai trouvé meilleur que la peinture que j’en avais tirée.

Mais j’ai aussi découvert qu’il était dessiné sur la reproduction d’une peinture totalement différente (j’ai écrit sur la signature devenue illisible) et que Matisse n’était pas ma seule inspiration et pas si directe.

Le blanc devait être noir mais il est resté ainsi.

Sans le moindre doute, elle est la première toile de la série : Sur les traces du sorcier des couleurs.

When I was in the chapelle du Rosaire decorated by Matisse, I suddenly realized that one of my vigin Mary with the child had been inspired by him.

Back in Paris, I unearthed the sketch and found it better than my final painting. Yuck. But what I discovered too is that it was sketched on a reproduction of a totally different painting (I scribbled over the signature and can’t read it now…) and that Matisse was not my only inspiration and not so directly.

The white was to be black but I loved it white and it will stay like that.
